Grade 5 Excursion: Learning from Nature

Currently, Grade 5 students are exploring a unit under the theme of Sharing the Planet with the central idea "Over time, living things need to adapt in order to survive." We unpacked the unit together and talked about the information we would need to gather, to deepen our understanding on this particular topic. As one of the learning engagements, we decided to have an excursion, to learn more about plants, to UPT Balai Konservasi Tanaman Kebun Raya Cibodas. The staff members were very helpful and we were able to have a visit on the 4th October 2018.

It was a sunny day and all Grade 5 students were excited to learn from nature. We arrived at about 09.30 at Kebun Raya Cibodas and straightly went to the Audio Visual Room to watch a video about the history of Kebun Raya Cibodas. Kak Dwi and Kak Effendi, two of the staff members helped us to understand more about the conservation effort that the staff members of UPT Balai Konservasi Tumbuhan Kebun Raya Cibodas focus on. Then, we went around the conservation area and visited some thematic gardens. We saw a large collection of plants, including ferns, mosses, cacti, succulents, carnivorous plants, as well as Amorphophallus titanum, which is also known as the titan arum. We learnt about the uniqueness of each type of plants, how they reproduce, the conditions that are suitable for their growth, and other valuable information.

We ended the excursion by having a trekking activity in the rainforest. Divided in three groups, we entered the rainforest led by Bapak Lan, Bapak Muslim and Bapak Cahyadi. It was such an amazing experience! We were able to see so many different plants. Some plants can be used as medicine and we also saw some other plants that are poisonous for animals or humans. We could also hear the sounds of insects, smell the wet soil and see the high level of biodiversity.

We have learnt a lot from the excursion and we are ready to inquire more! Thank you very much, UPT Balai Konservasi Tumbuhan Kebun Raya Cibodas. We hope next time we can go there again and explore more about plants.
