Hello, 8 Helsinki has been taking part in an activity extraordinaire. This activity was fun you know, and taught us many things about Design Technology (DT) and Science. You do want to know right? It began on September 18th. We were about to cook, but first, we were divided into 5 groups. Each group had to cook something different from the others. Why? Because each group took on the role of a chef who was cooking for someone who has a disease. The diseases were Osteoporosis, Bronchitis, Hypertension, Typhus and Diabetes.

Talking about puberty under  the “Who We Are” theme was very exciting. In the beginning of the unit, we, the students, felt embarrassed to talk about it, especially when we talked about how our bodies are changing. After having several discussions, we realized that it is one of the important phases we have to face. We also learned how to be responsible for our bodies and deal with peer pressure. We researched, found information and invited a guest speaker, who was also our PE teacher, Pak Heru, to deepen our knowledge. We also talked to our parents and asked questions related to puberty. We have learned a lot from this unit. Now we are confident and ready to become teenagers.

Grade 5 students have their Sundanese language session every Friday after lunch time. They learn Sundanese through an interesting teaching tool called "wayang golek" (Sundanese puppets) show. Pak Arief Setiawan, one of the Grade 5 teachers acts as "dalang"(puppeteer). They learn Sundanese words, phrases and sentences through the show. Sometimes Pak Arief integrates the story with the unit of inquiry being explored. Last Friday, he told a story about decision-making, which was related to the current unit of inquiry. Grade 6 students were also invited to watch the show. Learning Sundanese is fun and Grade 5 students can't wait to have another Sundanese language lesson.
