Acid Base Experiments with Red Cabbage Indicator

On 19 & 21 January 2016, Grade 11 students had a chemistry practical activity which was making a natural acid-base indicator using red cabbage. An indicator is a substance which color varies according to the concentration of hydrogen ions. It can be an acid or a base. In this chemistry practical activity, we used some tools and materials: pan, knife, beaker, spoon, red cabbage, water, filter paper, vinegar, and distilled water. Here are the steps. First, we cut the cabbage and boiled it in the water until the water became purple. Then, we put some pieces of paper into the water and then we dried them until they became indicators.

Celebrating Our Learning through Primary Years Programme (PYP) Exhibition

Grade 6 students of Sekolah Pilar Indonesia have just held their Primary Years Programme (PYP) Exhibition on the 22nd January 2016. The PYP Exhibition is a culminating project for each PYP student held in the final year of PYP. Through the Exhibition, all students demonstrated their understandings of the five essential elements of the programme: concepts, knowledge, skills, attitudes and action. Several purposes of the PYP Exhibition are to engage students in an in-depth, collaborative inquiry, to provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate independence and responsibility for their own learning, to demonstrate how students can take action as a result of their learning and to celebrate the transition of learners from primary to secondary education.

Grade 2 Students Exploring Weather

Grade 2 students have been exploring a unit under the transdisciplinary theme of “How the World Works”. The central idea is “Weather impacts our daily lives”. In the tuning in phase, the teachers set up six stations with different pictures of weather (sunny, cloudy, rainy, foggy, stormy and windy). The students had the opportunity to visit every station and write down what the picture looks like, sounds like and feels like on a Y-chart.
